What makes people fear the end of the world, as every few years a sect predicts it for sure and fails?

For a short period of time the sect that predicts the end of the world has control over the weak willed idiots who swallow all the nonsense they spout. There's plenty mugs out there who are happy to believe in all sorts of made up rubbish. Just look at every religion out there.
